To me the mystery and the unknown is part of what makes the M1 carbine so interesting to me. As many others have stated in the past the M1 carbine is probably one of the most if not the most underrated firearm in our history. Back when I carried an M2 in Korea back in 1968-69 I had no idea what I had in my hands.
