Something that might help also would be to gently apply the parking brake (keep your finger on the release button so it won't set) for a short distance just before parking the car. That will heat and dry both the shoes and drums and remove moisture that causes the rusting.

I just dont get how hard barking would affect the "secondary and seperate" E brake system..
