With having everything hooked up I guess the easiest way to check the gear would be to remove the two bolts holding the oil pump on. Remove sparkplugs to make it easy to turn engine by hand. Turn engine and watch the bearing for the oil pump (with the flat hole cut in it) to see if it turns.

I have a 2000 175 efi removed mine last June after having some issues and had a mercury mechanic diagnose the problem and suggested I remove the oil injector completely. So after a little more research I removed it so far no problems at all. I use the 50:1 ratio that's 2.6 ounces of oil per 1 gallon of gas.
