It's a KS47 gen 2 upper I bought stripped from Palmetto State Armory. You can do it with gen 1 uppers as well, but you have to put in your own overinsertion stops into the upper. Otherwise, standard barrel and bolt. Bolt carrier is cut to accept AK mags. I guess you could say it's special built, but the PSA KS47 Uppers are already good to go.

The KS47 is supposed to work with all AK mags. I’ve had to use my dremmel to make the gen 3s work so if you really want gen 3s, that’s what you’d have to do. On the Range there are a lot of hard surfaces that the blast is bouncing off of. In the field there are only soft surfaces that dampen the blast. Im very familar with the KS47. Yes, it was a DDC side charger i saw break. It was mounted in the 13th spot and worked loose. The guy using the gun pulled it back and it torqued to the side. It rendered his rifle useless. Anytime you add an additonal moving part to a rifle you add a potential failure point.
