You can get a lot farther than the 168 blocks (84 each way) if you want. Mine was something like 110 each way. There's a min and a max, and the max is pretty far. Your arena is too small. Make it longer (62-ish blocks on each side at the bare minimum). Make sure there aren't any platforms in the ground, either.
