Picked up SnS as my very first and it has faithfully served my hunts. Rise SnS is probably the most advanced and fun it's ever been. Picked up DB in Rise. It's really fun with the addition of Wire bugs but it really falls short when compared to how flashy the other weapons got. Everyone's Wire bug is/are better than DB's.

I recommend Sword and Shield as an entry point mostly for learning how the game works. It's fast and agile and comes with a shield for emergency guarding. The combos are relatively straight forward, and it doesn't have any complex mechanism like gauge and stamina management so less chance of being confused.
