A little late to the party but Firefly-iii is a superb tool (and its free!) that's fairly similar to YNAB. I used YNAB all the time prior to the price increase and then looked for a new platform and this is incredible. So YNAB is essentially just the envelope budgeting method, you can do it for free using excel I'm sure. However for me, the money I've saved by having a very easy to use, visually clear and well designed budget app like YNAB means it's easily paid for itself multiple times over. My husband and I have a far better grasp of our true expenses now.

I'm new to YNAB and I've hit a frustrating road block. I linked all of my savings, investment, and retirement accounts to YNAB. The way I already money manage seems pretty similar to YNAB, except I funnel the majority of my discretionary income into savings and investment and only spend whatever token amount is left in my checking account.

Envelope style budgeting is less about income and expenses, and more about looking at what money you have right now, and tracking what your goals are for that money.
