Both are avoidable, and fairly easy to fix. The UIM(upper intake manifold) gasket is the one between the LIM and UIM. The 2.8/3.1 V6 engines are notorious for LIM gasket failure. In a nut shell most GM V-engines have LIM gasket issues. GM just went a little cheap on the gasket design. The UIM gasket is not the issue so much on the 3800 seriesII as it is the UIM plenum itself that fails.
