In 1966, Rheingold brewery introduced America’s first light lager, a 99-calorie beer called Gablinger’s. It flopped and the recipe was later sold to Miller Brewing. They rejiggered the formula to create the 96-calorie Miller Lite, introduced nationwide in 1975. It became a breakaway hit that tasted great and was less filling.
